What: The challenge is to pick up 152 pieces of litter
When: Anytime between September 18 and November 19
Where: Anywhere in Palm Beach County!
Why: If everyone in the U.S. picked up 152 pieces of litter at the same time, our country would be litter-free!
The Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County is partnering with Keep Palm Beach County Beautiful to host the first local #152andYou challenge from September 18 - November 19. The challenge is for each person to pick up at least 152 pieces of litter, log the items on the Clean Swell app (or on a paper data card) and submit your information! #152andYou kicks off on September 18 with the opportunity to participate in the Ocean Conservancy's International Coastal Cleanup Day. In addition to this event, there are many area cleanups to participate in to reach the "152" goal (check the Keep Palm Beach County Beautiful webpage for a list of events). Participants can also work towards the goal of collecting 152 pieces of litter on their own time, in their own space anytime during the challenge dates! The first 152 people to complete the challenge will receive a t-shirt, and any student participant can earn up to three community service hours upon completion!
In 2020, Keep America Beautiful conducted a national litter study as a follow-up to one it conducted in 2009. While the good news is that the study shows roadside litter is down 54% since 2009, the results estimate that there are nearly 50 billion pieces of litter along U.S. waterways and roadways. That might seem overwhelming, but if every individual in the U.S. were to pick up 152 pieces of litter there would be no more litter - if, of course, nobody litters again! There is still a long way to go but we encourage you to join the #152AndYou movement to end litter! Take the #152andYou pledge, and sign up today!
