Fluorescent lamps are an energy efficient, cost effective alternative with many benefits to you, the user, and the environment. Fluorescent lamps use less electricity than a standard incandescent bulb, last longer, and give off less heat, making them a cost-effective lighting alternative. There are a wide variety of lamps now available to fit almost any freestanding lamp or lighting fixture you may own.
Fluorescent lamps do contain mercury, and therefore should not be incinerated. Because much of the waste generated in Palm Beach County is incinerated, fluorescent lamps are not accepted curbside. Homeowners are asked to bring their used lamps to any one of our hazardous waste drops-offs including all SWA transfer stations and the Household Hazardous Waste Facility on North Jog Road in West Palm Beach.
Other mercury containing devices, or MCD's, such as thermostats, thermometers, electrical switches and liquid mercury should be brought to your nearest SWA staffed hazardous waste collection center.
